Jack the Giant Slayer - A Great Success

Jack the Giant Slayer movie review

A movie review by Leah Delgado

Movie info

A remake of one of the most told and infamous fairytales known to man, makes it's way to the big screen. Jack, a poor farm boy in desperate need of money sets out to the kingdom hoping to sell his horse. There he meets a monk who trades him ancient beans, claiming they are worth more than Jack could imagine in return for his horse. Reluctant, he takes the beans and the monk whisks away quickly. Jack's uncle, furiously throws the beans and one of them slip through a crack in the floor. On a dark and rainy night, water seeps through the floor and the bean cracks open, and a large beanstalk grows rapidly, taking his house up with it. When he reaches the top, a large unknown floating island sits, waiting for it's guests to uncover the mystery.

The Review

If you enjoy medieval fantasy epics, such as the award winning Lord Of The Rings, or even playing the Elder Scrolls franchise, then this is the film for you. The film is purely based on the ever so famous fairytale; Jack And The Beanstalk, although a few changes have occurred. There is no chicken that lays golden eggs, but Jack does discover a jewel shaped as an egg. There is also a magical crown that controls the giants, making them slaves to whoever wears it. I felt these little addons worked exceptionally well with the film, and made it into an epic battle between man and giant. The graphics are amazing, the CGI is phenomenal and the acting is also brilliant. Nicholas Hoult (from Skins and Warm Bodies) never disappoints us. Eleanor Tomlinson (Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging) also plays her role exceptionally well as the graceful and beautiful princess. Brian Singer transforms this traditional tale into a new, fresh look, which in my opinion, he has done excellently.

Although this may not be everyone's cup of tea, you can't fault the way the story is shown in this new light. It brings excitement, drama and leaving you in awe for days. It's fun filled adventure for all the family, and very enjoyable to watch.

The film did flop quite terribly at the box office, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not worth it to watch. It's a great film that deserved more than it got. The film came out for DVD and Blu Ray release on June 18th 2013.

In conclusion, I thought the film was a huge success in my eyes (even if it didn't do so well at the box office) and it's definitely one to watch if you've never seen it. I will post some ads below for a DVD website that delivers films straight to your computer.
